The German economic daily Handelsblatt reveals data from an expert report on Monday showing that switching to electric cars will lead to the loss of a large number of jobs in the country.

The report of the National Platform for the Future of Mobility (NPM) – an advisory body of the German government gathering experts, officials and representatives of the economy – alerts that supporting electric motorization can cost Germany up to 410,000 jobs.

Only in the engine and drive production sector, 88 thousand are at risk. employees.

„The calculation is simple: the internal combustion engine consists of at least 1,200 parts. Electric – of about 200. The faster the transformation takes place in transport, the less you’ll need pistons, gears or cylinder head gaskets, and thus – more and more places work will become unnecessary „- sums up the main idea of the” Handelsblatt „report, which first reached the document.

The reason for preparing the expert opinion are the plans of the federal government, according to which by 2030 between 7 million and 10 million e-cars will be moving on German streets. This is to help reduce CO2 emissions. As a report, however, a side effect can be a domino effect, which will cover not only the automotive industry, but also metallurgical and mechanical engineering.

The Automotive Industry Association (VDA), however, is trying to calm down, judging that the scenario presented by government advisers is extremely pessimistic, because it assumes that by 2030 electric cars and batteries for them will be mainly produced outside Germany. „These assumptions are not true,” said Kurt-Christian Scheel of VDA’s Handelsblatt.

In 2018, 834 thousand people worked in the German car industry.
