Modernizing the economy – the use of artificial intelligence, autonomous devices, big data – is often associated with the implementation of the fifth generation telecommunications network. It is to enable the rapid transfer of large amounts of data with a delay reduced to imperceptible microseconds.

However, Margrethe Vestager is of the opinion that not all companies need this network. – We have many small and medium-sized enterprises in Europe that can start with 4G and then switch to 5G when it is implemented. We want to encourage 4G-based digitization now, says the EU Commissioner.

Toolkit coming soon

An additional argument for digitizing the economy without looking at 5G is the problem that the European Union has with the Chinese concern Huawei – a producer of telecommunications equipment and one of the main suppliers of equipment for building a fifth-generation mobile network. The company is seen by the United States administration as a threat to national security. – Because of the uncertainty surrounding Huawe, some say that digitization has to wait not until tomorrow, but for several years. We wouldn’t want that, ”says Vestager.
